Batting average (AVG) divides hits by at-bats, showing how often a batter gets a hit. .300 is the standard for elite, .350+ is batting-title territory.

Formula: hits / at-bats. Walks, hit-by-pitches, and sacrifices are not counted as at-bats, so disciplined hitters don't accumulate at-bats as quickly.

Ichiro set the MLB single-season hits record (262) in 2004 with a .372 average, winning the batting title.

Limitations: AVG treats singles and home runs equally, missing power. Pair it with OPS or xwOBA.
